Chapter 12 - The Ghost from the Past

|

The fragile, beautiful bubble of their new reality was shattered violently three days later.

Grace had just dropped Micah off at the secure gates of the Dalton Academy. As she stepped back into the waiting armored SUV, Marcus's radio crackled with a frantic, urgent tone.

"Boss," a security guard's voice echoed from the penthouse lobby channel. "We have a situation at the front desk. A man is demanding to see Ms. Mallerie. He's intoxicated and aggressive."

Grace’s blood ran completely cold.

"What's his name?" Marcus demanded, throwing the SUV into drive.

"David Thorne."

Grace stopped breathing. The color drained entirely from her face. David was Micah’s biological father. He was an abusive, alcoholic gambler who had abandoned them seven years ago when the medical bills for Micah's asthma began piling up.

"Grace?" Marcus looked at her through the rearview mirror, recognizing her terror. "Do you know this man?"

"He’s my ex-boyfriend," Grace whispered, her hands shaking uncontrollably. "He's Micah's father. He must have seen me on the news with Ethan. He's here for a payout."

"We will handle it," Marcus promised grimly, hitting the sirens to cut through traffic.

When they arrived at the luxurious lobby of Ethan’s residential tower, the scene was chaotic. David, looking bloated and manic, was screaming at the concierge, attempting to shove past two massive security guards.

"I know she's up there playing house with the cripple!" David roared, spitting onto the marble floor. "She owes me! That's my kid!"

The elevator doors pinged open.

Ethan wheeled out into the lobby. He wasn't wearing a suit. He wore a simple black sweater, but the aura of pure, unadulterated menace radiating from him silenced the entire room.

David stopped screaming, looking at the billionaire with a mixture of greed and drunken bravado.

"Ah, the sugar daddy," David sneered, taking a stumbling step forward. "Listen, wheels. If you want to keep my baby mama, it's gonna cost you. I want ten million, or I go to the press and tell them she's an unfit mother keeping my son from me."

Grace rushed into the lobby just in time to hear the threat. "David, stop!"

Ethan held up a hand, silencing Grace without looking at her. He wheeled his chair slowly, methodically, until he was exactly two feet away from the drunk, abusive man.

"Marcus," Ethan said calmly.

"Yes, sir."

"Break his jaw."
