Chapter 9 - The Kite in the Park

|

To keep Noah distracted from the looming court date, Emily took him to a sprawling neighborhood park on Sunday. Alexander showed up uninvited, carrying a cheap plastic kite still wrapped in cellophane.

For forty-five minutes, Emily sat on a wooden bench, laughing so hard her stomach hurt as she watched a grown man battle the wind. Alexander ran back and forth across the grass, his expensive shirt untucked, looking entirely out of his element as Noah screamed instructions like a drill sergeant.

“You run a hospital, Jack!” Emily called out, wiping tears of laughter from her eyes.

Alexander froze, the kite string slipping from his fingers. He snapped his head toward her, panic flaring in his chest. Had she found out?

Emily waved her hand dismissively. “I mean, you act like you could run one! You’re so bossy with that string!”

Alexander forced himself to breathe, his heart hammering wildly. Eventually, a gust of wind caught the cheap plastic, and the kite soared into the blue sky. Noah cheered triumphantly and threw both of his small arms entirely around Alexander’s waist.

“You did it, Jack!”

Alexander went rigid. He had been raised in a household where affection was a transaction, tied to grades and corporate expectations. The unconditional, sudden warmth of this child terrified him. Slowly, he placed one large hand on Noah’s back. Something deep inside his chest fractured and broke wide open.

That evening, as the sun set, Noah ran ahead to look at the ducks. Emily walked slowly beside Alexander on the paved trail.

“He likes you,” she said softly.

“I like him too,” Alexander replied, watching the boy.

Emily stopped walking. Her voice was gentle, but laced with steel. “Be careful with that sentence, Jack. My son has already lost one father. He doesn't need to lose someone else.”

Alexander’s chest tightened. “I know.”

“No, you know it as a fact,” Emily corrected him, turning to face him. “I know it as waking up at two in the morning because he dreamed Ryan came home. So do not become important to him just because you’re bored, or because you’re lonely.”

“I’m not using him,” Alexander said, his voice raw.

“Then know why you’re staying.”

May you like

Alexander looked at her, at the wind blowing her hair, at the fierce protection in her eyes. “I’m staying because I want to be around you, Emily. I want to be here.”

Emily stepped closer, gently pressing two fingers against his chest. “I don’t need perfect, Jack. I don't need money. But I need real. Tell me who you really are.”
