Chapter 2 - The Stranger in the Hallway

|

Everything in the hallway froze. Vanessa’s hand hovered in the air. Margaret released Emily’s wrists so abruptly that Emily stumbled forward, her shoulder scraping against the rough concrete.

At the far end of the corridor stood a man. He wore a crisp white dress shirt, the sleeves rolled halfway up his muscular forearms. No jacket. No tie. His dark hair was perfectly styled, but his expression was anything but manicured. It was a look of cold, calculating fury.

Margaret, a woman who usually treated blue-collar hospital employees like invisible furniture, recovered her aristocratic poise first. She smoothed the front of her designer coat.

“This is a private family matter,” Margaret snapped.

The stranger walked toward them, his footsteps echoing with deliberate weight.

“No,” he said. His voice was terrifyingly quiet. “That stopped being true the moment you assaulted an employee inside this hospital.”

Emily pulled her phone to her chest, rubbing her throbbing wrists. She studied the man. He didn’t wear a security uniform. He lacked the rushed, exhausted posture of a doctor. Yet, when he stepped fully under the flickering fluorescent light, Margaret’s face drained of all color.

Vanessa lowered her hand, sensing the shift in power. “Who are you?”

The man ignored her completely. His piercing gaze landed on Emily, lingering on her bleeding lip and the angry red marks forming on her skin. His jaw ticked. Without breaking eye contact with Emily, he pulled a sleek phone from his pocket.

“Security to Service Corridor C, old west wing. Now,” he commanded.

“You can’t order—” Margaret started, her voice shaking.

He shot her a single, glacial look. She snapped her mouth shut.

“I also want the security supervisor, the facilities director, and whoever signed off on leaving this camera offline,” the man continued into the receiver.

Emily blinked, her mind racing. Who was this guy?

Margaret swallowed hard, her haughty demeanor entirely evaporated. She took a step back, whispering his name like a curse. “Mr. Bennett…”

The stranger’s expression shifted for a fraction of a second, his eyes darkening. He ended the call, looking at Margaret with absolute disgust. “You’re going to remain right here until security arrives.”

May you like

“You have no idea who my family is,” Margaret threatened weakly.

“Right now, Mrs. Carter,” he replied, “I’m much more interested in why you thought that mattered.”
