Chapter 17 - The Fall of the Carters

|

It took Margaret’s legal team exactly four minutes of panicked whispering in the hallway to capitulate.

When they returned to the conference room, the lead attorney looked incredibly tired. He slid a piece of paper across the table toward Emily.

“My client withdraws the petition for custody, with prejudice,” he said flatly. “She agrees to the terms of the restraining order. No contact with the minor child, Noah Carter, without explicit written permission from the mother.”

Margaret didn't look up from her lap. She looked suddenly very old, the facade of power completely shattered by the reality of her own actions caught on tape. Vanessa had already slipped out the back door, abandoning Margaret the second the word 'police' had been mentioned.

Emily took the pen Sarah handed her. Her hand shook slightly as she signed her name to the document, securing her son’s future forever.

When they walked out of the courthouse onto the wet pavement, the gray clouds had broken, letting a few rays of afternoon sun bleed through. Emily took a deep breath, the air tasting sweeter than it had in years.

“You did great in there,” Sarah said, packing her briefcase into the trunk of her car.

Emily looked at the lawyer. “He gave you the footage, didn't he?”

Sarah paused. She looked at Emily carefully. “Alexander Bennett is my boss. But he didn't hand it to me. He simply authorized the release of the hospital's internal audit to your legal counsel. He made sure the system worked exactly the way it is supposed to work for every employee.”

Emily nodded slowly. “Thank you, Sarah.”

“Don't thank me,” Sarah smiled. “I just pushed play.”

That afternoon, Emily went home and ordered a massive, overpriced pepperoni pizza. She and Noah ate it on the living room floor while Linda watched from the couch.

“We won, buddy,” Emily told Noah, wiping tomato sauce off his chin. “Grandma Margaret isn't going to bother us anymore.”

Noah cheered, holding up a slice of pizza in victory. But after a moment, his smile faded slightly. He looked over at the duct-taped box fan rattling in the corner.

“Mom?”

“Yeah?”

“Does this mean Alexander can come back now?”

Emily’s heart gave a painful, complicated squeeze. She looked at the fan, then at her phone sitting silently on the counter. “I don't know, Noah. Things are… complicated.”
