Chapter 18 - The Resignation

|
Two weeks passed. The hospital returned to its normal, chaotic rhythm.
Emily continued her shifts in the kitchen. She chopped vegetables, served trays, and scrubbed counters. But the air in the hospital felt different to her now. Every time she walked past the maintenance door, she felt a ghost. Every time a man in a dark suit walked past the cafeteria, her heart leaped into her throat, only to crash when she realized it wasn't him.
Alexander was keeping his promise to the letter. He didn't visit the kitchen. He didn't wait by the lockers. He remained an invisible phantom on the 40th floor.
On a Friday afternoon, Emily sat in the breakroom—which now featured twelve comfortable new chairs—staring at a piece of paper in her hand. It was a job offer.
With Margaret’s threat gone, Emily had finally applied for the culinary management program at a downtown restaurant. It paid more, had better hours, and crucially, it wasn't owned by Bennett Health Group.
Denise, the head cook, walked up and tapped the paper. “You taking it?”
Emily looked up. “I think I have to.”
“We’ll miss you,” Denise said softly. “But you don't belong stuck in this basement forever, Emily. You got a life to live.”
Emily nodded. She folded the paper, slipped it into her pocket, and marched out of the kitchen. She took the elevator up, passing the 10th floor, the 20th, all the way to the 40th.
The receptionist recognized her immediately this time and didn't stop her as she walked down the plush carpet toward the CEO’s corner office.
Emily didn't knock. She pushed the heavy glass door open.
Alexander was sitting at a massive mahogany desk, reviewing a stack of contracts. When he looked up and saw her, he froze entirely. The pen slipped from his fingers, clattering onto the desk. He looked exhausted. The confident, ruthless CEO was gone, replaced by a man who looked like he hadn't slept in a month.
“Emily,” he breathed, standing up quickly.
She walked over to his desk, reached into her pocket, and pulled out an envelope. She placed it squarely on top of his contracts.
“What is this?” he asked, his voice tight with panic.
“My two weeks' notice,” Emily said calmly. “I got a management job at a restaurant across town.”
Alexander stared at the envelope as if it were a bomb. He looked up at her, his dark eyes filled with absolute despair. “You’re leaving.”
May you like
“I can't work for you, Alexander,” she said softly. “The power dynamic… it’s always going to be there as long as you sign my paychecks. I need a fresh start.”
He swallowed hard, fighting to keep his composure. He nodded slowly. “I understand. I won't stop you.”
