Chapter 12 - Your Shoes Finally Make Sense

|

There are many ways a person can exhibit rage. Some people scream. Some throw things. Emily did none of that. As she stared at the man who had infiltrated her life, she simply became terrifyingly, completely still.

Alexander dismissed his trailing assistants and executives with a single, sharp look. The lobby emptied out rapidly, sensing the sudden drop in the room's temperature. He walked slowly toward her, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird.

“Emily,” he said, his voice tight.

She stood up. The silence radiating from her felt like a physical blow.

“Jack?” she asked. Her voice was completely devoid of emotion.

Alexander’s face tightened in agony. He reached a hand out toward her. “Emily, please. Let me explain.”

She raised one hand. Just a few inches. “No.”

He stopped instantly, as if hitting a brick wall.

Emily’s eyes dragged over him. She looked at the thousands of dollars worth of fabric draped over his shoulders. She looked at the gold executive badge clipped securely to his lapel. Then, slowly, she looked down at his feet.

She let out a harsh, broken sound that was almost a laugh. “Your shoes. Your shoes finally make sense.”

“Emily, listen to me—”

“You knew who I was that day in the hallway,” she cut him off, her voice rising, shaking with a cold fury.

Alexander swallowed. “Yes.”

“You knew where I lived. You knew about my paycheck.”

“Yes.”

“You knew about Noah.” Her voice cracked on her son's name. “You knew about Ryan. You knew about Margaret.”

Alexander closed his eyes for a second. “Yes.”

Tears welled up in Emily’s eyes, hot and furious. “And I didn't even know your goddamn name.”

He had no defense. None. All his corporate negotiations, all his billions of dollars, and he had absolutely nothing to say.

“You sat at my kitchen table,” Emily whispered, stepping toward him, jabbing a finger at his chest. “My son trusted you. I told you things… I told you things I would never have told the man who owned the hospital.”

“I know,” he pleaded.

Her eyes flashed with sudden violence. “Stop saying you know! You don't get to know everything anymore!”
