Chapter 15 - The Deposition

|

The morning of the custody deposition, the North Carolina sky was a miserable, pouring gray.

Emily sat at a long mahogany table in a sterile conference room at the downtown courthouse. Her hospital-appointed lawyer, a shark of a woman named Sarah Vance, sat calmly beside her. Across the table sat Margaret Carter, looking regal in a navy pantsuit, flanked by three incredibly expensive lawyers. Vanessa Hale sat next to Margaret, looking bored.

The deposition was a bloodbath.

For two hours, Margaret’s lead attorney grilled Emily. They brought up her bank statements, her late rent payments, and her grueling hospital hours. They painted a picture of a desperate, impoverished woman who was neglecting her child.

“Mrs. Carter,” the lawyer drawled, pacing the room. “You claim you provide a stable environment, yet your own mother requires near-constant medical care, correct?”

“My mother is perfectly capable of watching Noah after school,” Emily said, keeping her voice dead level.

Vanessa chimed in with a sickly sweet smile. “And what about the men you bring around? This 'Jack' character who has been practically living in your apartment?”

Emily’s hands balled into fists under the table. “He is a friend.”

Margaret scoffed loudly. “A maintenance worker friend? Really, Emily. Noah deserves the resources and stability of the Carter family. Ryan would have wanted him with me.”

“Do not bring Ryan into this,” Emily hissed, her composure finally cracking. “Ryan left us with fifty thousand dollars in gambling debt and Vanessa in his bed!”

Margaret’s lawyer slammed a hand on the table. “Objection. Slander. We are here to discuss your fitness as a mother, not my client’s late son.”

Sarah Vance, Emily’s lawyer, finally sat forward. She opened a thick black briefcase and pulled out a single, silver flash drive. She pushed it to the center of the table.

“Actually,” Sarah said, her voice dripping with ice, “we are here to discuss my client’s fitness. And I believe a mother’s ability to protect her child from physical abuse is the highest measure of fitness there is.”

Margaret frowned. “What is that?”

“That,” Sarah smiled, “is the unedited, high-definition security footage from Service Corridor C of Crownridge Medical Center, dated three weeks ago.”

Margaret’s face instantly lost all color.

Emily stared at the flash drive. She hadn't given that to Sarah. There was only one man who could have pulled that restricted footage.
