Chapter 16 - The Invisible Shield

Margaret’s lead attorney sneered at the flash drive. “Security footage? My client already admitted there was a minor verbal altercation in the hospital. That camera was broken anyway.”
Sarah Vance leaned back in her chair, steepling her fingers. “The camera was offline for maintenance. However, the backup server, installed at the personal request of the hospital’s CEO two years ago, records to a separate cloud drive. An internal audit pulled the footage.”
Vanessa shifted uncomfortably in her seat, looking toward Margaret. “What is she talking about?”
“Let’s watch, shall we?” Sarah said, plugging the drive into a laptop and turning the screen toward the opposing counsel.
The video was silent, but the high-definition image was damning. It clearly showed Margaret violently pinning Emily’s arms behind her back. It showed the vicious twist of Emily’s wrists. It showed Vanessa stepping forward, slapping Emily across the face, and then shoving her brutally into the concrete wall.
Margaret’s lawyers stopped taking notes. The room went entirely silent, save for the clicking of the laptop fan.
“As you can see,” Sarah said quietly, “this is coordinated, physical assault and battery. Furthermore, the audio—which we enhanced—clearly captures Mrs. Carter here threatening to use her wealth to manipulate a family court judge.”
Margaret looked like she was going to be sick. “You… you can't use this. It’s an internal hospital document!”
“It was subpoenaed perfectly legally,” Sarah replied. “Now, we have two options today. Option A: You drop this ridiculous custody petition immediately, sign a permanent restraining order keeping you and Ms. Hale fifty yards away from Emily and Noah, and we walk away.”
Margaret’s jaw trembled. “And Option B?”
“Option B,” Sarah smiled, a predatory gleam in her eye, “I hand this flash drive over to the Charlotte Police Department. I file criminal assault charges against both of you. And I make sure the local news anchors have the footage by the six o’clock broadcast. The Carter family legacy will be ruined by breakfast tomorrow.”
Margaret stared at the screen, watching herself twist Emily's arms. The aristocratic arrogance was entirely gone, replaced by naked terror.

Emily sat quietly, staring at the silver flash drive. Alexander had kept his word. He hadn't called her. He hadn't barged in to rescue her like a knight in shining armor. He hadn't used his money to buy her off.
Instead, he had quietly, legally, handed her the sword so she could fight her own battle.
