Chapter 3 - The Sister

|
Emily burst through the hospital room doors like a hurricane, her coat half-buttoned, her hair a wild mess of blonde tangles.
She took one look at the monitors, the heavy bracing around my neck, and the empty space beneath the hospital blankets. She didn't ask questions. She didn't offer empty platitudes. She just collapsed into the chair beside my bed and buried her face in my shoulder, sobbing uncontrollably.
"I'm here," Emily choked out, her tears soaking through my gown. "I'm right here. I should have come to the house. I shouldn't have listened when you said you needed space."
"It wasn't you," I whispered, reaching up with a heavy, bruised arm to stroke her hair. "He had my phone. He texted you. I never wanted space."
Emily pulled back, her eyes flashing with a sudden, violent fury. "Where is he?"
"County jail. Denied bail until the arraignment tomorrow."
"I'm going to kill him," she hissed, wiping her eyes fiercely. "I'll burn his goddamn house to the foundation."
"The police are already there," I said, a hollow sensation settling in my stomach. "They're searching the utility room. They're looking for the rope."
Emily gripped my hand tight enough to ground me. "You are never going back there. When you get discharged, you're coming with me. My house is secure. We'll get a restraining order, an unlisted number, everything."
"He'll find a way, Em. You know how his mind works. It's a game to him. Losing means he just changes the rules."
May you like
"He doesn't make the rules anymore," she promised, standing up to adjust my blankets. "You survived the worst thing he could possibly do to you. He has nothing left to threaten you with."
She was wrong. He had one thing left. And he was already plotting how to use it.
