Chapter 17 - The Collapse

|
The moment the judge revoked his bail, the polished, controlled Daniel Vance completely vanished.
"You're lying!" Daniel screamed, leaping to his feet. His chair crashed to the floor, echoing like a gunshot in the stunned courtroom. "She fabricated those receipts! She's a manipulative bitch!"
The defense attorney tried to grab his arm, but Daniel shoved him away violently.
"She deserved it!" Daniel roared, turning his psychotic fury toward the jury. The mask was gone. The monster from the utility room was finally standing in the light. "She was weak! She was trying to take my child away from me! I did what I had to do to discipline her!"
The courtroom erupted into chaos. Reporters scrambled, yelling over each other. The judge pounded his gavel, shouting for order, but Daniel was completely unhinged.
He lunged toward the witness stand, his eyes burning with lethal intent.
"I should have killed you!" he screamed at me.
Before he could cross the floor, three court bailiffs tackled him to the ground. They pinned him against the hardwood, snapping heavy iron cuffs around his wrists.
I didn't flinch. I sat perfectly still in the witness box, looking down at the man who had tormented me, broken me, and murdered my child. He was thrashing on the floor, foaming at the mouth, his expensive suit ruined.
He looked pathetic.

"Take him to holding," the judge ordered, his face pale with disgust. "The trial will resume tomorrow for closing arguments, though I believe the defendant has just made the prosecution's case for them."
As they dragged Daniel out of the courtroom, he locked eyes with me one last time. But I didn't see fear in my reflection anymore. I saw a survivor.
