Chapter 1 - The Record

|

"Yes," I said.

My voice was a dry, hollow scrape in the silent room, but it was the loudest sound I had ever made.

The doctor’s eyes softened, a silent promise exchanged between us. She didn't hesitate. Her pen hit the medical chart, scratching the ink into the paper with definitive, heavy strokes. She documented his exact words, sealing them into a legal record that Daniel could no longer erase with his charming smile.

Outside the door, the heavy knocking stopped. The silence that followed was worse than the pounding. It meant Daniel was calculating.

"I'm calling the police, Rachel," the doctor whispered, moving toward the wall-mounted phone. "And security will be here in less than a minute. He won't get through that door."

"He doesn't need to break it down," I replied, staring at the ceiling. "He always finds another way."

I heard the heavy, purposeful footsteps of the hospital security guards arriving in the hallway. I heard the muffled, indignant tone Daniel used when he played the victim.

"My wife is in there," Daniel’s voice drifted through the heavy wood, dripping with synthetic concern. "She’s traumatized. She had a terrible fall. I need to be by her side."

"Sir, we need you to step back," a deep voice commanded.

"You don't understand," Daniel insisted, the edge in his tone sharpening. "She's not in her right mind. She needs me."

The doctor hung up the phone and walked back to my side, gripping my cold hand. "The police are three minutes away."

Tears finally breached my eyes, burning as they tracked down my bruised temples. My baby was gone. The son he had demanded, the life I had tried to protect, was gone. But as the distant wail of sirens cut through the night air, I realized something else.

The woman who used to apologize for his anger was gone, too.
