Chapter 15 - The Secret Ledger

|

That night at the safe house, I couldn't sleep. The defense's lies played on a loop in my head.

I opened my laptop, pulling up a copy of the hard drive files the police had decrypted. Ms. Sterling was focusing entirely on the assault, but I knew Daniel. His obsession with control extended to everything in his life.

I started digging through his financial folders again. If he was willing to lie about my mental health, there had to be a paper trail.

At 3:00 AM, I found it.

Buried deep in a folder labeled Consultations were hundreds of wire transfer receipts. Most were normal business expenses. But three of them, processed the week before the trial, were offshore payments to the "psychiatric clinic" that had produced my forged medical records.

He hadn't just faked the documents; he had bought them from a disgraced doctor who lost his license five years ago.

I grabbed my phone and called Sterling.

"Rachel, it's three in the morning," she groaned.

"I have him," I said, my heart racing as I stared at the screen. "The defense’s whole narrative is built on my supposed psychosis. Daniel paid a disgraced doctor half a million dollars to fabricate those records last week. I have the receipts."

The line went dead silent for a moment. I could hear Sterling sitting up in bed.

"Are you absolutely sure?"

"The offshore account numbers match the shell company his mother uses," I confirmed. "It’s witness tampering, forgery, and perjury."

"Send it to me immediately," Sterling’s voice was wide awake, razor-sharp with adrenaline. "Don't say a word about this tomorrow. We let the defense walk right into the trap."

I closed the laptop, a dark, victorious smile touching my lips for the first time in months. The hunter was about to become the prey.
