Chapter 11 - The Mother-in-Law

The video evidence changed everything. The defense team’s "slip and fall" narrative evaporated overnight.
But wealth always finds a backdoor.
Two days after the disastrous deposition, I was sitting on Emily’s porch, drinking tea, when a sleek black town car pulled into the driveway.
Daniel’s mother, Eleanor, stepped out. She was a woman carved from ice and old money, draped in cashmere and dripping in pearls. She walked up the steps, completely ignoring the "No Trespassing" signs.
"Rachel," Eleanor said smoothly, offering a tight, bloodless smile. "You look well, considering."
"Get off my property," Emily snapped, stepping out of the front door with a phone in her hand. "I'm calling the police."
Eleanor waved a dismissive hand. "Call them. I'm just here to drop off a gift." She reached into her designer handbag and pulled out a thick, legal envelope, tossing it onto the porch table.
"What is that?" I asked, refusing to touch it.
"It's a trust fund," Eleanor said plainly. "Five million dollars. Fully vested, tax-free, deposited into an offshore account in your name. It’s yours to keep, Rachel. All you have to do is refuse to testify at the trial."
I stared at the woman. She knew exactly what her son had done. She had probably watched the video in her lawyer's office, and her only reaction was to calculate the cost of cleaning up his mess.
"He murdered your grandchild," I said, my voice shaking with disgust. "He tortured me, and he killed his own blood."
"He made a mistake," Eleanor corrected coldly. "A severe lapse in judgment. But he is my son. And I will not watch him spend his life in a concrete box because of a domestic squabble."

I picked up the envelope, walked down the steps, and shoved it back into her chest.
"Keep your money, Eleanor. I'd rather watch him rot."
