Chapter 16 - Rachel Takes the Stand

|
The courtroom was dead silent as I walked up to the witness stand.
I wore a simple black dress, my posture perfectly straight, my cane left at the defense table. I wanted the jury to see me as I was: unbroken.
Ms. Sterling walked me through the night of the attack. I spoke clearly, without crying, forcing myself to look directly at the jury as I described the rope, the pain, and the absolute darkness of the utility room.
When it was time for cross-examination, Daniel’s lawyer approached me like a wolf cornering a wounded deer.
"Mrs. Vance, you claim you were tortured. Yet, isn't it true you told your sister you were hearing voices? That you were a danger to your own child?"
"No," I said calmly. "That is a lie."
"I have the medical records right here," the lawyer sneered, waving the forged document. "Diagnosed severe psychosis. My client was trying to save you from yourself."
Ms. Sterling stood up. "Objection, Your Honor. The prosecution would like to submit new evidence regarding these medical records into the official record."
The judge frowned. "Approach the bench."
For five agonizing minutes, the lawyers whispered fiercely with the judge. I watched Daniel. His confident facade finally cracked, his eyes darting nervously toward his mother in the gallery.
The judge looked furious. He turned to the defense attorney. "Counselor, the prosecution has just provided offshore wire receipts proving your client paid a disbarred doctor to forge the very documents you are holding."
The color drained entirely from the defense attorney's face. He dropped the paper as if it were on fire.

"Your Honor, I... I had no knowledge of this."
"The jury will disregard the defense's claims of psychosis," the judge boomed. "And Mr. Vance, your bail is officially revoked."
