Chapter 4 - The Brother's Shadow

|
Silas Blackwood sat in his private office, swirling a glass of expensive bourbon. His computer screen glowed with encrypted files and illegally obtained surveillance footage.
He had paid a substantial amount of money to have Charlotte Bennett tracked the moment she ran out of the estate. While Damian was tearing the city apart, tearing through her empty Brooklyn apartment like a madman, Silas was quietly gathering the real intelligence.
His phone buzzed. A text from his chief hacker.
Medical records accessed. Dr. Reyes clinic. Patient: Bennett, C. Six weeks pregnant. Twins.
Silas nearly choked on his bourbon.
He set the glass down, staring at the glowing text message. Twins. Damian was going to be a father to twins.
If their father found out about this, the old man would demand the children be brought into the fold. Damian’s position as the heir to the Blackwood empire would become absolute, solidified by blood. Silas would be pushed out permanently, relegated to the shadows forever.
“Not going to happen,” Silas sneered to the empty room.
Damian had already declared her a mistake. He had already told the family she meant nothing. Silas just needed to make sure that "mistake" was permanently erased before Damian figured out the truth.
He picked up a burner phone and dialed a number he only used for the dirtiest jobs.
“I have a problem that needs cleaning,” Silas said, his voice cold and detached. “A woman. She got on a bus heading upstate. I want her found, and I want the situation handled. Quietly.”
“And the target?” the raspy voice on the other end asked.

“Eliminate her,” Silas ordered. “Make it look like a tragic accident. She has no family, no friends who will ask questions. Just get it done.”
He hung up the phone, smiling as he looked out the window. Damian was too busy playing the grieving lover to realize his brother was already pulling the strings of his destruction.
