Chapter 14 - The Bitter Truth

|

Damian didn't set Charlotte down. He held her tight against his chest, turning slowly to face his brother.

The murderous rage emanating from Damian was palpable. The air around him seemed to drop ten degrees.

“Silas,” Damian said, his voice deadly calm. “You ordered a hit on my wife and my children.”

Silas laughed, a bitter, jealous sound. “Your wife? She’s a street rat, Damian! She’s a weakness! The old man would strip you of your title if he knew you were breeding with a nobody. I was doing the family a favor.”

“You were securing the throne for yourself,” Damian corrected, his eyes locking onto his brother’s.

“Does it matter?” Silas smirked, gesturing to his armed guards. “You brought a knife to a gunfight, brother. Drop her, and I might make your death quick.”

Damian didn't move. He looked at Silas with a pity that enraged the younger brother.

“You always were a fool, Silas,” Damian whispered. “You think I came here alone?”

Suddenly, the red laser sights of a dozen sniper rifles cut through the blizzard, painting the chests of Silas and his three guards.

Marco and a tactical strike team emerged from the surrounding woods, their assault rifles raised and aimed squarely at the traitors.

Silas’s smug expression vanished, replaced by sheer, unadulterated terror. He dropped his gun into the snow, raising his good hand in surrender.

“Damian, wait! We’re blood!” Silas pleaded, stumbling backward.

“You stopped being my blood the moment you aimed a gun at my family,” Damian said coldly.

Damian nodded to Marco.

“Take them to the warehouse,” Damian ordered. “I want them alive. I will deal with my brother personally when my children are safe.”

Marco’s men swarmed Silas, dragging the screaming brother away through the snow.

Damian looked down at Charlotte, who was gasping through another contraction.

“I’ve got you,” Damian promised, holding her tighter. “You’re safe now.”
