Chapter 12 - Blood on the Snow

|

The flashlight beams swept across the snow directly above Charlotte’s head.

She held her breath, pressing her body tightly against the frozen bark of the oak tree. Her hands were numb, her lips blue from the biting cold. Another intense, agonizing contraction ripped through her stomach, forcing a quiet whimper from her lips.

“I hear her,” one of the tactical guards shouted, pivoting his flashlight toward her hiding spot.

Footsteps crunched closer.

Charlotte squeezed her eyes shut, wrapping her arms around her belly, silently apologizing to the babies she couldn't save.

Suddenly, a deafening roar echoed through the forest, completely drowning out the howling wind. It wasn't thunder. It was the sound of heavy helicopter rotors chopping through the blizzard.

A massive spotlight cut through the falling snow, illuminating the woods in blinding white light.

The guards looked up, shielding their eyes in confusion.

From the tree line behind them, shadows moved with terrifying speed.

A silenced gunshot dropped the guard closest to Charlotte. He collapsed into the snow, a dark pool of blood instantly staining the white powder.

The second guard panicked, raising his weapon, but a massive figure emerged from the blizzard like a demon.

Damian didn't bother shooting the second man. He tackled the guard to the ground, his bare fists driving into the man’s face with a brutal, sickening force until the guard stopped moving entirely.

Charlotte stared in absolute shock.

Damian stood up, his chest heaving, his dark overcoat covered in snow and blood. He looked like a god of war, terrifying and magnificent.

He turned slowly, his gray eyes locking onto the trembling woman huddled behind the tree.

“Charlotte,” he breathed, his voice cracking.

He dropped his gun into the snow and fell to his knees in front of her.

Charlotte shrank back, terrified of the man who had ordered her erased.

“Don't touch me,” she sobbed, clutching her stomach. “Please, don't hurt them.”
