Chapter 15 - Twins

The helicopter ride back to the city was a blur of heat, blankets, and quiet, urgent medical attention.
Damian had brought his personal syndicate physician on the flight. The doctor administered a specialized medication to halt the premature labor, monitoring Charlotte’s vitals and the dual heartbeats on a portable ultrasound machine.
Charlotte lay on a stretcher in the back of the spacious chopper, exhausted, shivering under the heavy wool blankets.
Damian sat on the floor beside her, refusing the seat, holding her cold hand in both of his. He hadn't stopped staring at her face since he pulled her from the snow.
“They’re okay,” the doctor confirmed, packing away his stethoscope. “The contractions are slowing. The stress and the cold triggered false labor, but the babies are stable. They need rest, and so does she.”
Damian let out a shuddering breath, kissing the back of Charlotte’s knuckles.
“Twins,” Damian whispered, looking at her belly in awe. “You’ve been carrying them alone for six months.”
Charlotte looked at him, the anger finally giving way to bone-deep exhaustion. “I was so scared, Damian. Silas said he would cut them out of me.”
Damian’s jaw clenched so hard a muscle feathered in his cheek. “Silas will never see the light of day again. I promise you that.”
“Your father,” Charlotte reminded him, her voice weak. “He won't accept them. He won't accept me.”

“My father is no longer the head of the Blackwood family,” Damian stated, his gray eyes flashing with a terrifying, absolute authority. “I am taking the throne tonight. Anyone who objects will answer to my gun. Our children will inherit an empire, Charlotte, and no one will ever threaten you again.”
Charlotte closed her eyes, finally letting the exhaustion pull her under. For the first time in six months, she didn't feel hunted. She felt the heavy, impenetrable shield of the mafia king wrapped completely around her.
