Chapter 20 - An Empire of Shadows

|

Three years later.

The Blackwood Estate was no longer a cold, quiet fortress of fear. It was alive with the sound of running footsteps and childish laughter.

Leo, a miniature version of his father, chased his sister, Maya, across the manicured lawns. The twins were a force of nature, fearless and fiercely protected by an army of loyal guards who adored them.

Charlotte sat on the stone terrace, wearing a simple sundress, sipping iced tea. She watched her children play, a warm, contented smile on her face. She was no longer the frightened teacher running in the snow. She was the Queen of the Blackwood syndicate, respected and feared in equal measure.

Damian stepped out onto the terrace, wearing a dark suit, holding two pristine Montblanc fountain pens in his hand.

He handed one to Charlotte and placed the other in his pocket.

“For signing the new shipping contracts today,” Damian smiled, kissing her deeply. “The business is completely legitimate now. The transition is finished.”

“No more shadows?” Charlotte asked, wrapping her arms around his neck.

“Only the ones we choose to cast,” Damian promised.

He looked out over the lawn, his gray eyes softening as Leo tackled Maya into a pile of autumn leaves, both children erupting into giggles.

Suddenly, Marco stepped out onto the terrace, his face grim.

“Boss,” Marco said quietly, not wanting to disturb the peace. “We intercepted a message from the Russian syndicate. They’re making a move on the southern ports. They think your transition to legitimate business means you’ve gone soft.”

Damian’s expression didn't change, but the cold, ruthless king reawakened instantly in his eyes.

He looked at Charlotte. She didn't flinch. She simply nodded.

“Let them think what they want, Marco,” Damian said softly, pulling his wife close. “Tell the men to arm up. It’s time to remind the Russians exactly whose city they are trying to steal.”

The war was never truly over. But this time, they were facing it together.
