I remained silent, refusing to engage with the man who had shattered my trust.
"Come on. I already apologized," he continued, his voice taking on a wheedling tone.
He hadn't.
"It was stupid," he added, attempting to minimize his actions. "I was drunk. Open the door and let me see your face."
I sat on the edge of the bed, the towel pulled tight around me, my heart pounding a steady rhythm against my ribs.
His voice softened, a manipulative tactic I had fallen for countless times before. "Babe, we can fix this."
The silence stretched, heavy and oppressive.
When I didn't answer, his facade crumbled. "You called the bank, didn't you?"
I remained silent.
He struck the door with his palm, the sound echoing through the room. "You had no right to freeze that loan!"
The sheer audacity of his statement was almost comical. He had forged my signature, leveraged my business, and physically assaulted me, yet he still believed my self-preservation was the violation.
"I know you're listening," he shouted, his voice thick with anger. "If you destroy this deal, Mason loses his deposit. Mom could lose her house."
The revelation was a stark confirmation of my worst suspicions. The restaurant project was a desperate attempt to salvage Judith's failing finances, and my business was the sacrificial lamb.
"You owe us an explanation," Connor demanded.
At 9:34 p.m., the distant wail of sirens pierced the night air. The party below fell silent, the music abruptly halted. The atmosphere shifted, the oppressive weight of impending consequences settling over the lodge.
Connor stepped away from the door, his silence speaking volumes.

Fifteen minutes had passed since I had entered the bedroom. In that short span of time, I had dismantled his carefully constructed scheme, frozen his fraudulent loan, and severed his access to my company.
