Chapter 2 - The Silent Exit

I hoisted myself up the ladder, ignoring the mocking cheers and the stinging pain in my cheek. My wet clothes clung to me like a second skin, heavy and uncomfortable. I stood dripping on the edge of the pool, a stark contrast to the perfectly manicured scene around me.
"Come on, Elise," Connor said, his voice laced with false innocence. "It was just a joke."
I stared at him, his face flushed with alcohol and a sick satisfaction. The man I loved, the man I had married, stood before me, unbothered by my humiliation.
"No," I replied, my voice steady despite the trembling in my body. "It was a decision."
I turned away, refusing to engage further. I walked past the laughing faces, the judging eyes, the silent complicity. I ignored Judith's dismissive comment about ruining the party. I didn't look back.
The music resumed, a hollow attempt to restore normalcy. I heard Connor trying to brush off the incident, assuring everyone I would be back once I calmed down. He believed I was retreating, retreating to lick my wounds in private.
He was wrong. I wasn't retreating. I was preparing.
I walked up the stairs to our rented suite, the cold seeping deeper into my bones. The silence of the room was a stark contrast to the noise outside. I stripped off my wet clothes, the silk clinging stubbornly to my skin. I wrapped myself in a thick towel, shivering as I assessed the damage.
My cheek was throbbing, a nasty bruise beginning to form. My hands were scraped and raw. But the physical pain was nothing compared to the emotional betrayal.

I looked at the mirror, seeing the reflection of a woman who had spent years trying to fit into a mold that was never meant for her. I had compromised, accommodated, and endured, all in the name of love.
But love shouldn't require such a high price.
