Chapter 1 - The Plunge

|

The icy water hit me like a physical blow. The sudden shock forced the breath from my lungs in a sharp gasp. The dark surface of the pool closed over me, silencing the music and the chatter. My expensive dress, a heavy silk concoction meant for a celebration, clung to my limbs, dragging me down.

I flailed, my hands striking the rough concrete side of the pool. A sharp, metallic pain exploded across my cheek as I collided with the ladder. Disorientation washed over me. For several agonizing seconds, I didn't know which way was up. The cold was paralyzing, seeping into my bones, a terrifying counterpart to the suffocating silence beneath the surface.

When I finally broke through, gasping for air, the world above was a blur of lights and faces.

"Look at her face!"

The voice was unmistakably Connor's. A chorus of laughter followed, a cruel, mocking symphony that echoed off the surrounding trees.

I clung to the edge of the pool, shivering uncontrollably. My wet hair plastered against my face, stinging my eyes. I reached for the aluminum ladder, my fingers numb and uncoordinated.

Mason, Connor's cousin, leaned over the edge, a smirk playing on his lips. "Need a hand, Elise?"

He offered his hand, but as I reached for it, he yanked it back, a malicious glint in his eye.

I slipped back into the water, a helpless, sodden doll. The laughter erupted again, louder this time, a collective roar that shattered something deep within me.

That was the moment the illusion shattered. The realization struck with brutal clarity: I was utterly alone in this crowd of people who claimed to be family.
