Chapter 8 - The Syndicate Revealed

Mark immediately contacted Detective Reynolds, the federal investigator who had been instrumental in bringing Sterling down. Reynolds arrived at their home within the hour, his usual stoic demeanor replaced by a look of grim concern. He carefully bagged the letter as evidence, his eyes scanning the perimeter of their small property.
"Sterling wasn't operating in a vacuum," Reynolds admitted, sitting across from them in the living room. "We’ve suspected for weeks that his firm was acting as a laundering front for a much larger, international syndicate. We call them 'The Vanguard.' Sterling was taking the fall to protect them."
Sarah felt a surge of nausea that had nothing to hand with her pregnancy. "You’re telling me that the man who tried to ruin my life, who tried to steal everything from us, is just a middleman?"
"He was a highly paid, highly connected middleman," Reynolds corrected gently. "But yes. The people above him are the ones who manipulate markets, buy politicians, and silence whistleblowers permanently. And now, they know you are the loose thread that unraveled their most profitable operation."
Mark wrapped a protective arm around Sarah’s shoulders. "We need security. We need a safe house."

"I can arrange for a detail," Reynolds said, standing up. "But you need to understand that The Vanguard doesn't operate like street thugs. They are lawyers, bankers, and executives. They will try to ruin you financially and legally before they ever resort to physical violence. You need to audit everything. Your bank accounts, your digital footprint, everything."
That night, sleep was a luxury neither Sarah nor Mark could afford. They sat side by side in the dim glow of Mark’s laptop, changing passwords, encrypting files, and locking down their lives. Sarah looked at the glowing screen, a fierce determination replacing her initial fear. She had already dismantled one corrupt empire; she was not about to let a shadow organization force her into hiding. She was a mother now, and she would fight to the bitter end to ensure her child was born into a world free of their poison.
