Chapter 13 - The Retaliation

Sarah returned to the safe house with the USB drive, feeling a dangerous mix of triumph and absolute terror. Handing the drive over to Reynolds and Chloe felt like handing over a live grenade.
"This is it," Reynolds said, his eyes widening as the decrypted files populated his screen. "This is the holy grail. Thorne’s entire financial network is mapped out here. We have enough to issue international arrest warrants."
But Elias Thorne was not a man who went quietly into the night.
Before the federal warrants could even be processed, the retaliation hit with the force of a freight train. It didn't come in the form of hackers or hidden assassins; it came in the form of a highly publicized, ruthless legal assault.
Thorne’s army of lawyers filed a massive, multi-million dollar defamation and corporate espionage lawsuit against Sarah and Mark. They alleged that Sarah had fabricated the original evidence against Sterling to steal corporate secrets for a rival firm. But worse than the lawsuit was the media campaign.
Overnight, tabloids and news networks received "anonymous" tips. They broadcasted manipulated audio clips of Sarah supposedly demanding hush money. They published fake documents showing Mark’s architectural firm receiving kickbacks. The public narrative shifted violently. The hero was suddenly being painted as a master manipulator.
"They’re freezing our assets legally," Mark said, staring in horror at a letter from their bank. "The judge granted an emergency injunction. We can't even pay our mortgage."
Sarah sat on the edge of the bed, watching Lily sleep peacefully in her crib, completely unaware that her parents’ world was collapsing. Thorne was using the justice system as a weapon, tying them up in so much litigation that they would be bankrupt before they ever saw a courtroom.
"We can't fight him with lawyers," Sarah realized, her voice cold and steady. "He owns the arena. If we play by his rules, we lose."

"Then what do we do?" Mark asked, desperation edging his voice.
"We burn the arena to the ground," Sarah replied. "We leak the ledger to the public."
