Chapter 7 - The Lingering Shadows

The weeks following the spectacular collapse of Sterling’s corporate empire were a dizzying blur of media requests, exhaustive legal briefings, and rare, quiet moments of reflection. Sarah and Mark had retreated to their modest home on the outskirts of the city, hoping the physical distance would act as a buffer against the relentless news cycle. The media had dubbed Sarah the "Whistleblower of Wall Street," a title she neither sought nor entirely wanted. While she appreciated the thousands of letters from other victims who felt empowered by her actions, the constant spotlight was exhausting, especially as she entered the third trimester of her pregnancy.
One crisp Tuesday morning, the illusion of safety was shattered. Sarah was sitting at the kitchen island, sipping decaf coffee and reviewing a draft for a new non-profit foundation she wanted to start, when the mail arrived. Among the utility bills and baby catalogs was a plain, unmarked white envelope. There was no return address, just her name printed in block letters. A cold prickle of unease washed over her as she reached for a letter opener.

Inside was a single sheet of heavy stock paper. The message was typed, succinct, and chilling: “Sterling was just the gatekeeper. The house still stands. Watch your step.”
Sarah stared at the words, her breath hitching in her throat. She instinctively placed a protective hand over her swollen belly. Mark walked into the kitchen, his hair damp from the shower, a smile on his face that instantly faded when he saw her pale expression. He crossed the room in three long strides, taking the paper from her trembling hands. His jaw tightened as he read the threat. The nightmare, it seemed, had not ended with Sterling’s arrest. It had simply evolved. They had cut off the head of the snake, but they were only just realizing they were standing in a pit of vipers. The real war was only just beginning.
