Chapter 23 - The Interception

The drive to the daycare center was a blur of blaring sirens, courtesy of Reynolds’ federal escort. Sarah sat in the back of the armored SUV, her knuckles white as she gripped the door handle. Every second felt like an hour.

"We are two minutes out," Reynolds barked into his radio, coordinating with local law enforcement to lock down the perimeter of the daycare.

As they rounded the corner onto the quiet suburban street, Sarah saw it—a sleek, unmarked black van idling ominously near the playground fence. Two men in dark clothing were stepping out, moving with calculated, predatory speed toward the entrance.

"Take them down!" Reynolds ordered.

The federal SUV swerved aggressively, cutting off the black van and slamming into its front bumper. FBI agents poured out of the vehicle, weapons drawn and leveled at the two fixers.

"FBI! On the ground! Now!"

The element of surprise was absolute. The fixers, expecting an easy abduction at a quiet daycare, found themselves staring down the barrels of federal assault rifles. They raised their hands, dropping to the pavement without firing a shot.

Sarah burst out of the SUV, ignoring Reynolds’ commands to stay put. She sprinted past the arrested men and pushed through the glass doors of the daycare. The teachers had already initiated a lockdown, huddling the children into the secure interior rooms.

"Lily!" Sarah screamed, panic edging her voice.

A teacher opened a door, holding the toddler safely in her arms. Lily, completely oblivious to the chaos outside, giggled and reached for her mother. Sarah snatched her daughter, burying her face in the child’s soft hair, sobbing uncontrollably. The dead man's switch had failed. They were safe.
