Chapter 20 - The Anniversary

A year to the day since they arrived in San Valerio, they celebrated.

Liam baked a small cake, and Elena brought over extra frosting from the bakery. Mateo and a few of the fishermen came by, bringing fresh catch and loud, joyous laughter to the small cottage.

Lily ran around the yard, playing tag with the local children, her laughter echoing clear and unburdened in the warm coastal air.

Liam stood by the grill, watching his daughter. She wasn't a pawn in a corporate war. She wasn't a secret to be hidden. She was just a little girl, happy and safe.

"You did good, Arthur," Elena said, standing beside him with a glass of wine.

"We did good," Liam corrected her, looking around at the friends who had become their family.
