Chapter 14 - Silas

Liam sprinted back to the cottage. The front door was locked. He checked the silent alarms; they hadn't been tripped. Lily was safe.

He didn't go inside. He went to the shed, retrieving the suppressed handgun from the lockbox.

If Silas was here, it meant his mother wanted absolute certainty. Silas was a man who left no loose ends.

Liam moved back toward the town square, keeping to the rooftops and the shadows of the alleyways. He saw the black sedan still parked by the plaza.

Silas was leaning against the hood, smoking a cigarette. He was an older man, dressed impeccably, with a face scarred by decades of underworld violence.

Liam dropped down from a low roof, landing silently in the alley ten feet away. He raised the weapon, pointing it directly at Silas’s chest.

"Tell them to call it off, Silas," Liam said, his voice echoing softly in the alley.

Silas didn't flinch. He took a slow drag of his cigarette and exhaled the smoke.

"Hello, Liam," Silas said casually. "You're looking remarkably rustic. Your mother is very disappointed in this little disappearing act."

"My mother is a parasite," Liam replied. "And I am not going back."
