Chapter 10 - Preparing the Contingency

That night, after Lily was asleep, Liam went to the loose floorboard under his bed.

He pulled out a heavy, waterproof lockbox. Inside were three forged passports, a thick stack of untraceable cash, and a matte-black suppressed handgun. He had hoped he would never have to touch these items again.

He checked the action of the weapon. It was flawless.

He didn't sleep. He sat by the window in the dark, watching the street leading up to their cottage.

The Harrison empire had infinite resources. If they had tracked him to San Valerio, they would not send local police. They would send "fixers"—men who existed off the books, men whose only job was to retrieve the heir and eliminate the child who was viewed as a weakness.

"Not this time," Liam whispered to the dark.

He began wiring the cottage. It wasn't anything explosive—that would draw too much attention. But he set up silent, localized tripwires at the front and back doors. If anyone stepped onto his property, he would know seconds before they reached the handle.

He was no longer just a mechanic. The lethal, calculating heir of the Harrison syndicate had awoken.
