Chapter 3 - The Eviction

|

"You can't kick us out!" Brooke shrieked, her hands balling into fists. "Grant, tell her she can't do this!"

Grant looked at his sister, then at the agonizing burns on my chest, and finally at the forensic accounting report in his hands. The man I had married was breaking into a thousand pieces right in the center of the foyer.

"You stole from me," Grant whispered to his sister.

"We took what we were owed!" Diane intervened, stepping in front of Brooke like a shield. "You owe this family, Grant! We supported you!"

"You stole half a million dollars from my company!" Grant roared, his voice shaking the crystal chandelier above us.

I didn't wait for the family drama to conclude. I pulled my phone from my pocket.

"My private security team is waiting at the front gates," I announced. "You have exactly thirty minutes to pack whatever you brought into this house. Anything purchased with my credit cards stays."

"This is illegal!" Diane shrieked. "You need to give us a thirty-day notice!"

"You are not tenants," I corrected her smoothly. "You are guests. And you have overstayed your welcome."

I tapped my screen, authorizing the security gates to open.

"Thirty minutes," I repeated. "Or the police will assist you."

I turned my back on them and walked up the stairs, locking myself in the master suite. Below me, the shouting began. The sound of doors slamming and Brooke weeping hysterically echoed through the mansion.

It was the ugliest symphony I had ever heard.
