Chapter 14 - The Broken Man

Grant sat in the driver’s seat of a cheap compact rental car, parked across the street from my estate. He had been sitting there for three hours, staring at the wrought-iron gates.
He looked down at the silver folder resting on the passenger seat.
The divorce papers.
He had spent the last three days trying to find a lawyer who would fight the equity conversion, but every firm he called demanded a retainer he couldn't pay. His entire life had been dismantled in less than a week.
He picked up his phone and dialed my number.
I answered on the second ring.
"Morgan," Grant whispered, his voice completely broken. "Please. I’m sitting outside."
"I know," I said. "My security cameras picked you up three hours ago. Come to the gate. Leave the car."
The iron gates swung open.
Grant walked up the long, winding driveway. He looked older, defeated. The arrogant, successful CEO was gone, replaced by a man who had finally realized the true cost of his family's entitlement.
I stood on the front porch, wearing a simple black dress, holding a cup of tea.
"Did you bring the papers?" I asked.

Grant stopped at the bottom of the steps. He held out the silver folder.
"I signed them," he choked out, tears openly falling down his face. "I gave you everything. You took the company. You have the house. We have nothing left, Morgan. Please. Just let my family go."
