Chapter 20 - The Open Horizon

A year later, the Belle Meade estate was completely transformed. I had stripped away the heavy, pretentious decor Diane had favored and replaced it with sleek, modern art and light, airy furniture. The house finally felt like it belonged to me.
It was a quiet Friday evening. I was sitting on the back patio, enjoying the cool autumn breeze, reviewing a prospectus for a new tech startup I was considering acquiring.
The estate intercom buzzed.
"Ms. Hale," my head of security said, his voice unusually tense. "There is a gentleman at the gate."
"I’m not expecting anyone," I replied, frowning. "Turn him away."
"I tried, ma'am," the guard hesitated. "But he said to tell you he has the missing pages from your grandfather's original holding company charter. The ones lost during the restructuring five years ago."
My blood ran cold.
Only three people in the world knew those pages were missing. My grandfather, my attorney, and me.
"Let him through," I commanded, my heart rate accelerating.
Ten minutes later, a sleek, black Aston Martin pulled up the sweeping driveway. A man stepped out. He was tall, impeccably dressed in a dark bespoke suit, with sharp features and eyes that seemed to absorb the twilight.
He walked up the stone steps to the patio, holding a leather portfolio.
"Morgan Hale," he said, his voice a smooth, dangerous baritone that commanded instant attention. "You’ve made quite a name for yourself this past year. Dismantling the Mercer family was a masterpiece of corporate warfare."
"Who are you?" I asked, standing up, my instincts instantly on high alert.
He smiled, a dark, calculated expression that promised absolute chaos.
"My name is Julian Vance," he said, extending his hand. "And I believe you and I have a mutual enemy who is currently trying to steal my grandfather's company."
I looked at the man, then at the leather portfolio in his hand. The war with the Mercers was over. But a much larger, much more dangerous game was just beginning.

I smiled, shaking his hand.
"Come inside, Julian," I said. "Let's see what you brought me."
