I walked down the steps and took the folder from his hands. I opened it, verifying his signature on the bottom line. It was done. The marriage was legally over, and my assets were entirely protected.
"Thank you, Grant," I said quietly, closing the folder.
"Are they safe?" he asked, his voice trembling. "You promised you wouldn't go to the FBI."
"I keep my promises, Grant," I replied, turning to walk back up the stairs. "I am not sending the files to the FBI."
Grant let out a massive, shuddering breath of relief. "Thank you. Thank you, Morgan. I know I messed up. But thank you for showing mercy."
I stopped at the top of the stairs and looked back at him.
"I didn't show mercy, Grant," I said softly. "I showed jurisdiction. The FBI handles federal crimes. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation handles state-level corporate embezzlement."
Grant froze, the relief shattering instantly. "What?"
"The TBI received the forensic files on Wednesday," I informed him, watching the color drain from his face. "Arrest warrants were issued this morning."
"You lied to me!" Grant screamed, taking a step forward.
"I didn't lie," I corrected smoothly. "You just didn't read the fine print. You and your family have a habit of not reading the fine print."
Sirens echoed in the distance.

Grant turned around, looking down the long driveway toward the main road. Three dark, unmarked police SUVs were pulling up to the curb where his rental car was parked.
"They aren't here for you, Grant," I said. "They’re heading to the Starlight Inn. Room 214."
