Chapter 18 - The Social Fallout

|

The high society of Belle Meade is a vicious, unforgiving ecosystem.

When the news of the Mercer arrests hit the local papers, the erasure of their family name was instantaneous. The country club formally revoked their membership, sending the notice directly to the county jail. The women who used to drink mimosas with Diane at charity brunches suddenly claimed they "barely knew her."

I, on the other hand, stepped fully into the light.

I hosted a massive charity gala at the Belle Meade estate to benefit victims of domestic financial abuse. I wore a stunning, backless crimson gown that elegantly displayed the faint, healing burn scar on my chest—a badge of survival and absolute victory.

During the event, a prominent local socialite approached me, sipping a glass of champagne.

"Morgan, darling," she cooed, her eyes glittering with gossip. "You look simply radiant. We were all so shocked about... well, the unpleasantness with Grant's family. You poor thing, hiding your wealth all that time."

I smiled, clinking my glass against hers.

"I wasn't hiding my wealth, Susan," I replied smoothly. "I was evaluating my investments. And I have a strict policy of cutting my losses when the return on investment proves toxic."

Susan chuckled nervously, realizing that the quiet, submissive wife she thought she knew was actually the apex predator of the room.

"Well," she said, backing away slightly. "We are just thrilled to have the real you back in society."

I watched her walk away. I didn't need their approval, but the respect they now gave me out of sheer terror was undeniably satisfying.
