Chapter 16 - The Arrest

|
The scene at the motel was chaotic and thoroughly humiliating.
State troopers kicked the cheap laminate door of room 214 open, guns drawn.
Diane screamed, dropping her coffee cup on the stained carpet. Brooke tried to lock herself in the bathroom, but an officer kicked the door off its hinges, hauling her out by the arm.
"Diane Mercer and Brooke Mercer," the lead investigator announced loudly, his voice carrying out into the motel parking lot where a small crowd of onlookers had gathered. "You are under arrest for grand theft, wire fraud, and corporate embezzlement."
"Get your hands off me!" Diane shrieked as the cold steel handcuffs clicked around her wrists. "I am a prominent member of society! You can't do this!"
"You're a thief, ma'am," the officer replied dryly, pushing her toward the door.
Brooke was sobbing hysterically, mascara running down her face in thick black rivers. "It wasn't me! It was my brother's company! We had permission! Call Grant! Call my brother!"
They dragged them out into the bright daylight, shoving them into the back of separate squad cars. The flashing red and blue lights illuminated the cheap motel sign, a fitting final backdrop for the women who thought they were royalty.
Grant arrived just as the cruisers were pulling away. He stood in the parking lot, completely helpless, watching his mother and sister being taken to county lockup.

He had no money for bail. He had no lawyers to call.
He was entirely, utterly alone.
