Chapter 20 - The Silent Shadow

I closed my laptop slowly, my mind racing through every conversation, every legal strategy, and every corporate decision Arthur Pendelton had touched over the last three years.
He knew everything about our family trust. He knew about Claire’s studio. He knew our corporate security measures.
I picked up my secure phone and dialed Dana Ruiz.
“Evelyn?” Dana answered. “I’m just leaving the office. Did you need something?”
“Dana,” I whispered, keeping my voice utterly calm. “I need you to quietly freeze Arthur Pendelton’s access to the Grant Meridian legal vault immediately.”
There was a long, terrifying beat of silence on the line.
“Evelyn...” Dana’s voice sounded strange, hushed, and deeply strained. “Why are you asking about Arthur?”
“Just do it, Dana,” I urged. “I have evidence he’s connected to Nathan.”
A soft, metallic click echoed over the phone speaker.
Then, a smooth, familiar male voice took over Dana’s phone line.
“I’m afraid Dana can’t execute that request right now, Evelyn,” Arthur Pendelton’s smooth, cultured voice said calmly into my ear.
My breath caught in my throat.
“Arthur,” I managed to say, gesturing frantically to Marcus, who instantly pulled his firearm and signaled his team.
“You always were remarkably sharp, Evelyn,” Arthur said softly over the line. “Nathan was a fool who let a simple domestic matter ruin a twenty-million-dollar annual operation. But you... you just couldn't leave well enough alone, could you?”
“Where are you, Arthur?” I demanded, standing up from my desk.
“I’m standing right outside your daughter’s ceramic studio,” Arthur replied gently. “The river is so quiet this time of evening. Claire just turned off the display lights...”

The line suddenly went dead.
I stared at the black screen of my phone, the blood draining from my face as the shadows of a far grander war stretched across the room, leaving the safety of my daughter hanging in a terrifying, fragile balance.
