Chapter 16 - New Earth

|

One year later.

The harsh winter cold had returned to the city, but inside a small, beautifully renovated brick building near the riverfront, the air was warm and filled with the gentle hum of soft jazz music.

A wooden sign hanging above the door read: Riverstone Ceramics Studio.

Claire had opened the studio using a portion of her divorce settlement. It was a creative sanctuary where she taught pottery classes and sold hand-crafted ceramic art.

More importantly, Claire partnered with local women’s shelters, allocating thirty percent of the studio’s monthly profits to provide temporary housing, career training, and legal aid for survivors of domestic abuse.

I pushed open the glass door, hearing the familiar chime of the brass bell.

Claire was standing near the large potter’s wheel in the center of the room. She was wearing an apron dusted with white clay, her dark hair pulled back in a loose bun.

She was laughing as she washed her hands in a tub of warm water, chatting with two young women who were carefully shaping clay on adjacent wheels.

She looked healthy. Her skin was radiant, her eyes were bright, and the deep emotional scars of her past had given way to an undeniable, vibrant strength.

She looked up, saw me standing by the entrance, and her face lit up with a warm, radiant smile.

“Mom!” she called out, drying her hands on a clean towel.

I walked over, wrapping her in a warm hug. “How is the morning class going?”

“Wonderful,” Claire said, gesturing toward the shelves lined with drying pots and vases. “We completely sold out of the holiday collection this morning.”

She reached onto a nearby drying rack and picked up a beautiful, blue-glazed ceramic bowl. The rim was slightly imperfect, but the structure was solid, thick, and remarkably strong.

She held it out to me with both hands.

“I made this for you,” Claire said softly.
