Chapter 12 - The Friday Meeting

|
Friday morning arrived with an icy, gray drizzle over the city.
The executive boardroom on the 50th floor of the Grant Meridian building was dead silent. The long glass windows looked out over the fog-covered skyline.
At 8:55 a.m., the elevator doors chimed.
Nathan Vale stepped out, wearing a brand-new charcoal designer suit. He adjusted his silk tie, holding his chin high, walking with the supreme confidence of a man who believed he had successfully blackmailed a billionaire corporation.
Beside him walked Lorraine, dressed in an expensive fur coat, carrying a leather briefcase.
They walked into Boardroom A as if they owned the building.
Dana Ruiz sat at the center of the table, flanked by our chief outside legal counsel, Arthur Pendelton.
I sat at the far end of the table, dressed in a sharp black suit, my hands folded calmly over a leather notebook.
Nathan didn't even acknowledge me. He pulled out a leather chair, sat down, and crossed his legs casually. Lorraine sat beside him, placing her briefcase on the glass surface.
“Let’s skip the pleasantries,” Nathan said, a smirk dancing on his lips. “You received my email. You know what I have, and you know what I want.”
Lorraine slid a printed document across the table toward Dana.
“Three million dollars in cash, a mutual non-disparagement agreement, and Nathan’s personnel file completely cleared,” Lorraine stated arrogantly. “Otherwise, your shareholders learn that Evelyn Grant fired a rising executive just to settle a personal family grudge.”
Dana didn't touch the paper. She simply looked at Nathan.
“Before we discuss financial compensation, Nathan,” Dana said coolly, “you need to identify the exact acquisition documents you claim give you this leverage.”

Nathan grinned, thinking he was closing the deal.
“Gladly,” he said.
