Chapter 2 - The Mother-in-Law

I stood in the shadow of the tall boxwood hedges, watching the warm glow of the kitchen lights.
My name is Evelyn Grant. To the world of international commerce, I am the founder and chair of Grant Meridian Logistics. Eighteen months ago, my conglomerate quietly acquired the regional firm where Nathan worked as a procurement director.
My controlling shares sat safely inside a family trust, and despite stepping back from daily operations, I still chaired the ethics committee.
Nathan had no idea his boss’s boss’s boss was the woman whose daughter he was torturing.
He had assumed my late husband left behind a comfortable life insurance policy. He assumed my quiet demeanor was weak. When I paid the down payment on their four-bedroom colonial, he thought it was an act of maternal desperation.
Three weeks before that night, our chief human resources officer, Dana Ruiz, had brought a flagged file directly to my private office.
Nathan Vale was under internal investigation.
An anonymous whistleblower had reported that he was routing lucrative supply chain contracts to a shell company controlled by his mother, Lorraine. Two junior accountants had also reported receiving explicit threats from Nathan when they questioned his billing invoices.
The board had authorized his immediate termination if Dana obtained final corroboration that Nathan had violated the strict conduct agreement he signed during his initial suspension interview.
I had promised Dana I would not interfere. I had promised to let corporate compliance run its course without exerting personal influence.
That promise ended the moment I saw my daughter on her knees in dirty water.
I stared at the glowing phone in my hand.
The video clip was saved. The evidence of his cruelty was absolute.
My phone lit up with a incoming call, but I bypassed it and dialed Dana’s secure cell number directly.

“Evelyn?” Dana answered on the second ring. “It’s late. Is everything alright?”
“Send the notice,” I said, my voice as hard as cold iron. “The contingency is satisfied. I’m forwarding video proof of misconduct and safety violations now.”
