Chapter 1 - The Kitchen Window

|

The first thing I saw through my daughter’s kitchen window was her wedding ring scraping across wet marble.

Claire was on her hands and knees, scrubbing the floor with freezing water while her husband, Nathan Vale, and his mother, Lorraine, ate imported caviar beneath a crystal chandelier I had paid for.

The night air outside was brutal, but the sight inside made my blood run colder than the November wind.

My daughter was wearing faded, oversized jeans soaked through at the knees. Her hands were raw, red, and shaking.

“Stop crying and serve the dessert,” Nathan snapped, his voice carrying clearly through the glass.

He didn't even look up from his phone as he raised his leather shoe and kicked the plastic bucket.

Gray, dirty water rolled over Claire’s legs and bare feet. She gasped, shrinking back as if she expected another strike.

Lorraine chuckled softly, setting her crystal flute down on the polished table.

“She’s always so dramatic, Nathan,” Lorraine said, adjusting her silk blouse. “A proper wife keeps a spotless kitchen. Her mother clearly never taught her how to manage a home.”

For one wild second, I wanted to break the glass with my bare hands. I wanted to tear down the door and drag my daughter out of that gilded prison.

Instead, I reached into my coat pocket, lifted my smartphone, and recorded twelve steady seconds.

I captured Claire flinching as Nathan’s shadow fell over her.

I captured Lorraine laughing behind her wine glass.

I captured Nathan bending down close enough to make my daughter cover her head with her hands.

I held my breath until my hands stopped shaking. Then, slowly, I backed away from the window into the darkness of the rose garden.

Nathan thought I was merely his quiet, widowed mother-in-law. He thought I was a harmless older woman who signed generous checks because she was desperate to keep her only child close.

What he never bothered to learn was that I didn't just have money.

I had power.
