Chapter 7 - Change of Tactics
By noon the next day, Claire was discharged with a brace for her ribs and strict instructions to rest. I brought her back to my apartment, double-locking the door and turning off her phone's location services.
Daniel, realizing his intimidation tactics in the hospital hallway had failed, abruptly shifted his strategy. Over the course of three hours, he sent Claire twenty-three text messages.
First came the apologies. Long, rambling paragraphs about how much he loved her, how the stress of his business was eating him alive, and how he swore he would never lay a hand on her again. Then came the prayers and the guilt trips, accompanied by photographs from their wedding day in Italy, trying to manipulate her nostalgia.
When the silence from our end continued, his mask slipped completely. The twenty-fourth message flashed on the screen, dripping with malice.
"Come home right now, or I report the money you stole."
Claire stared at the glowing screen, her face entirely blank with confusion.
"What money?" she asked, looking up at me. "I don't even have access to a debit card without his permission. How could I steal anything?"
I took her phone, read the message twice, and felt a slow, triumphant smile spread across my face.

"That," I said, tapping the screen, "is the first truly useful mistake he’s made."
An abuser's greatest weapon is isolation and fear, but their greatest weakness is their own arrogance. Daniel believed he could invent a financial crime to force her compliance, completely unaware that he had just handed a forensic accountant the ultimate invitation to audit his entire life. He had just opened the door to his own destruction.
