We were dismantling his financial life brick by brick, but the most chilling discovery came buried at the very bottom of the photographed office files. It wasn't a bank statement or a tax ledger; it was a life insurance policy.
As I opened the PDF on my screen, Claire’s hands began to shake violently.
It was a comprehensive life-insurance policy taken out on Claire’s life, purchased exactly eight months earlier. The payout was a staggering two million dollars.
Daniel was listed as the sole, irrevocable beneficiary.
"I never signed this," Claire whispered, her face draining of color. "I never took a medical exam. I didn't even know this existed."
The application form claimed that Claire had requested the policy herself, utilizing a loophole that bypassed the medical exam due to her previously clean health record.
I zoomed in on the signature line at the bottom of the electronic application. I pulled up the forged trust transfer document from the hospital and placed the two signatures side by side on the screen.
"Look closely," I said, pointing with my pen. "Look at the tail on the 'C' and the cross on the 't'."
"It's exactly the same," she gasped.
"Same unnatural hook. Same pen pressure. Same forgery," I confirmed.
