Chapter 18 - The Trap Snaps Shut

Mara walked over to the plaintiff’s table and placed Daniel’s original civil complaint right beside the federal bank-authentication report.

"The plaintiff attached genuine bank statements to support his fabricated accusations against my client," Mara told the judge. "In doing so, he inadvertently provided investigators with the exact account numbers they needed to uncover his fraud."

A heavy, suffocating silence fell over the courtroom. The realization of his own colossal, arrogant mistake washed over Daniel's face. He looked at the paperwork, then looked at me sitting quietly in the gallery.

Before his lawyer could even formulate an objection, the heavy oak doors at the back of the courtroom swung open.

Two federal agents in dark suits entered, flanked by the local detective who had originally photographed Claire’s brutalized face in my apartment weeks ago.

Daniel jumped up from his chair so fast it tipped over, crashing loudly against the wooden floor. Panic, raw and unfiltered, finally broke through his polished exterior.

"This is her doing!" he shouted hysterically, pointing a trembling finger directly at me in the gallery. "She set me up! She manipulated the records!"

I remained seated, crossing my legs, my voice carrying clearly through the room.

"I didn’t forge her signature, Daniel," I said calmly. "I didn't steal money from your employees. And I certainly didn't send threatening text messages from your personal phone."

The detective stepped past the swinging gate, pulling a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt.

"Daniel Mercer," the detective announced, his voice booming with absolute authority. "You are under arrest for aggravated assault, witness intimidation, forgery, insurance fraud, and federal financial crimes."
