Chapter 1 - The Storm at the Door

The storm outside was relentless, a torrential downpour that turned the city streets into rushing rivers. It was two in the morning, and the rhythmic drumming of rain against my apartment window had finally lulled me into a restless sleep. Then came the pounding. It wasn't a polite knock; it was frantic, desperate, like someone was being chased by the devil himself through the unforgiving night. I jolted upright in bed, my heart hammering furiously against my ribs. I grabbed the heavy flashlight I kept on my nightstand and crept toward the entryway, the hardwood cold beneath my bare feet. Peering through the peephole, the distorted fisheye lens revealed a soaked, trembling figure. It was Claire.

I threw the deadbolt and yanked the heavy wooden door open. My younger sister practically fell into my arms, soaked to the very bone. Her clothes clung to her shivering frame, dripping icy water onto my clean floor. She had one arm wrapped tightly around her ribs, her posture hunched in undeniable agony.

"Please..."

She whispered the word, her voice barely audible over the roaring thunder outside.

"Claire? My God, what happened?"

"Please... don't let me go back to him."

I pulled her inside and slammed the door shut, locking it instantly. The harsh entryway light revealed a horrifying truth I had long suspected but dreaded confirming. Her left cheek was a swollen, angry purple, the skin taut and bruised. A dark trail of dried blood crusted at the corner of her mouth. She looked up at me and tried to force a reassuring smile, as if she were apologizing for tracking mud and rainwater into my home. The effort was too much. Her eyes rolled back slightly, the last of her adrenaline fading, and her knees buckled.

I dropped the flashlight and caught her just before her head could strike the hard tile, lowering her gently to the floor.

"Claire, look at me," I demanded, brushing wet hair from her face. "Did Daniel do this?"

Her eyes snapped toward the street outside, wide with absolute, paralyzing terror. She didn't need to speak. That silent, terrified glance was all the answer I would ever need.
