Chapter 19 - The Arrest

The polished, arrogant facade Daniel had maintained for years shattered completely. As the federal agents moved in to secure his arms, he desperately tried to pull away, his eyes wild with disbelief.
"You can't do this! I own this town!" he yelled, but the agents were unbothered, efficiently snapping the cold steel around his wrists.
Realizing his power was entirely gone, he turned to the one person he had always been able to control. He looked at Claire, his expression morphing into a pathetic, desperate plea.
"Claire, please," he begged, his voice cracking. "Tell them this is a misunderstanding. We can fix this. You love me. You need me."
For years, those words would have worked. For years, Claire would have lowered her head and done whatever it took to keep the peace. But the woman standing in the courtroom today was not the same terrified girl who had shown up on my doorstep in the rain.
Claire stood up from the defense table. Her voice did not tremble. She looked at the man who had broken her bones and tried to steal her future.

"I needed a husband, Daniel," Claire said, her words cutting through the silence like glass. "You needed a hostage. I'm done."
The agents turned him around and marched him down the center aisle. They led him out the double doors, straight into the flashing cameras of the reporters he himself had foolishly invited to witness his triumph. The cameras captured every moment of his humiliation.
