Chapter 13 - Silence and Smears
Mara wasted no time. She securely sent the forged life insurance documents, the shell payroll evidence, and the trust fund transfer records directly to the investigating detective and our contacts in federal financial oversight.
Subpoenas were quietly issued. Bank records were frozen pending investigation. But publicly, we maintained an absolute, airtight silence.
Daniel, insulated by his own narcissism, entirely mistook our silence for fear. He believed we had retreated, licking our wounds after securing the protective order.
Emboldened by his delusion, he went on the offensive.
He began posting vague, melodramatic statuses online, portraying himself as a tragic victim. He heavily implied to their mutual friends that Claire was suffering from severe substance abuse issues and had violently attacked him in a drug-induced psychosis.
"He emailed my boss today," Claire said quietly one afternoon, staring at her laptop. "He told the design firm I need a leave of absence because I'm seeking psychiatric help."
"Let him talk," I told her, pouring a fresh cup of coffee. "Every lie he puts in writing is just another piece of rope he's using to hang himself."
His final act of desperation was the most audacious. He formally filed a civil lawsuit against Claire, accusing her of embezzling $300,000 from his construction company’s operational accounts.
When the process server handed Mara the thick legal complaint, she called me immediately, laughing in sheer disbelief.

"He actually filed it," Mara said over the phone. "He's accusing her of theft to explain the missing money in his accounts."
"Let him," I smiled. "He's about to learn why you never invite an auditor into your house."
