Chapter 17 - Dismantling the Facade

Inside the courtroom, the air was tense. Daniel’s attorney began by launching into a dramatic, well-rehearsed speech, calling Claire mentally unstable, manipulative, and desperate for cash.

Mara Chen stood up, utterly unfazed.

"Your Honor, the plaintiff’s claims are not just baseless; they are a smokescreen for his own extensive criminal enterprise," Mara stated clearly.

She began dropping evidence onto the judge's bench like heavy stones. First came the medical records proving Claire was hospitalized during the exact hours the alleged embezzlement took place. Next, she presented the extracted, threatening text messages Daniel had sent.

Then came the life insurance documents and the trust transfer, accompanied by a sworn statement from a state handwriting expert confirming the blatant forgeries.

Finally, Mara activated the courtroom projector. She displayed a massive, intricate financial chart tracing every single stolen dollar from the construction company directly into North Ridge Consulting.

"This is a shell company, Your Honor," Mara explained, her voice ringing with authority. "Used to hide marital assets, evade corporate taxes, and fund an illicit lifestyle, entirely controlled by the plaintiff."

The judge, a seasoned jurist who had seen it all, turned a hard, unforgiving glare toward Daniel.

"Mr. Mercer," the judge said, holding up the financial chart. "Did you, or did you not, disclose the existence of this multi-million dollar account during your sworn asset declaration?"

Daniel swallowed hard, his face turning a sickly shade of gray. "I... I don’t manage the day-to-day accounting details, Your Honor. My staff handles that."

"You signed every single wire transfer personally," Mara shot back instantly, producing the bank authorizations. "Your signature is on every page."
