Chapter 7 - The Collapse of Trevor

Trevor held the phone to his ear like it was a bomb about to detonate.
“Marcus, please!” Trevor pleaded, his previous smug attitude completely vanishing. “We talked about this! You said the initial eighty thousand was secured!”
He listened for another ten seconds before the line went dead. Slowly, Trevor lowered the phone, staring at my father with absolute betrayal.
“He just canceled the deal,” Trevor said, his voice trembling with anger. “My investor just pulled out because he got a system alert stating that Mercer Construction was officially flagged for financial restructuring!”
Madison gasped, gripping Trevor’s arm. “Trevor, what are you saying? Dad promised us that eighty thousand dollars for your deposit!”
“Your father lied to me!” Trevor yelled, completely forgetting that they were standing in front of dozens of wedding guests.
“Lower your voice!” Dad hissed, sweat glistening on his forehead. He slammed his phone into his pocket and glared at me with pure venom. “Claire... you did this. You went to the bank behind my back!”
“I didn't go behind your back, Dad,” I said smoothly. “I simply exercised my legal right to protect my credit profile from fraudulent activities.”
Mom stepped forward, her face twisted in rage, her hands shaking. “How could you do this to your sister on her wedding day? You are an evil, malicious child! We raised you, we gave you everything!”
“You didn't give me a single dime,” I replied, my tone icy cold. “I paid my own way through college. I built my own company. And for the last eighteen months, I have been paying for your vanity while you treated me like dirt.”
Before Dad could lung at me, the elevator doors at the far end of the hallway chimed open.
A tall man in a tailored charcoal suit stepped out, carrying a slim leather folder under his arm.
It was Daniel Shaw.

Dad went completely rigid. “What is he doing here?”
“I asked him to drop off some paperwork,” I said calmly. “Since we’re all gathered here celebrating family, I thought it was the perfect time to review the family records.”
