Chapter 16 - The Final Email

|
Six months after the wedding, on a quiet Sunday afternoon, I sat in my home office sipping chamomile tea.
My phone chimed with a new notification. It was an email sent to my personal inbox from my father's business address.
I opened it.
Claire,
I am writing this because your mother and I are at our breaking point. The bank took the final settlement from the house sale yesterday. We have nothing left. Madison is working as a cashier at a grocery store, and my health is failing from the stress.
I hope you are satisfied with what you have accomplished. You chose money and pride over your own flesh and blood. You destroyed this family over a vehicle you didn't even need.
We lost everything because of you.
Your father.
I read the email once through, feeling no anger, no sorrow, and no guilt.
For years, that sentence—You chose money over family—would have sent me spiraling into self-doubt, driving me to write checks and fix their self-inflicted disasters just to feel loved.
Now, I saw the words for what they truly were: the desperate gasps of a master manipulator who could no longer control his victim.
They hadn't lost everything because of me.
They had lost everything because they chose entitlement over honesty, greed over family, and lies over truth. I hadn't destroyed them; I had simply stopped standing between them and the consequences of their own actions.

I moved my mouse over the screen, clicked the 'Delete' button, and then permanently blocked my father's email address.
The silence that followed was the sweetest sound I had ever heard.
