Chapter 15 - Cornered Snake

|

Three months after the wedding, I was sitting in my glass-walled private office at Bennett Financial Advisory, reviewing a quarterly earnings report for one of my firm's largest corporate accounts.

My executive assistant, Sarah, knocked gently on the door frame. Her face was tense.

“Claire, your sister is in the lobby,” Sarah whispered. “She doesn't have an appointment, but she refuses to leave. She’s making a scene with the receptionist.”

I took a slow breath, saved my work, and stood up. “Send her in, Sarah.”

A moment later, Madison burst into my office.

She looked entirely unrecognizable from the polished, radiant bride who had yanked my hair three months ago. Her designer clothes were replaced with wrinkled, cheap sweatpants. Her hair was pulled back into a messy bun, and dark circles hollowed out her eyes.

She slammed her cheap synthetic handbag onto my mahogany desk.

“Are you happy now, Claire?” Madison spat out, her voice trembling with bitter rage. “Look at us! Mom cries every single night! Dad works fourteen hours a day just to pay off the bank! And I’m living in a tiny bedroom listening to traffic all night!”

I leaned back against my desk, crossing my arms calmly. “You made your choices, Madison.”

“You ruined my life!” she screamed, taking a step toward me. “If you had just given me that damn car, none of this would have happened! You have millions! You could fix this whole thing today with one check!”

“I don't owe you a single cent,” I replied, my voice cool and sharp. “You pulled my hair in front of two hundred people because you felt entitled to something I earned with my own sweat and blood. You and Dad thought you could humiliate me into submission.”

“We’re family!” she sobbed, tears smearing her cheap mascara. “Family helps each other!”

“Family doesn't steal,” I countered. “Family doesn't lie. And family certainly doesn't assault each other over a sports car.”

I pressed the intercom button on my desk. “Security, please escort Ms. Mercer out of the building immediately.”

Madison stared at me, her mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water, realizing that her tears, her rage, and her demands held zero power over me.

Two uniformed security guards stepped into the room, firmly grabbing her by the elbows and turning her around.

“Don't ever come back here, Madison,” I said softly as she was led away.
